Writing is hard. I knew that when I dove into my current novel. It’s been over four years since I’ve started writing from scratch. But I’m having a blast! I can’t wait to tell you about it.
Writing Updates
I reached 5K words last week; the funny thing is, I forgot how to check project word counts on Scrivener, the software I use for writing. I had no idea I reached 5K until last night (lol). I’m thrilled though.
Necromancywip has 5 chapters so far. Three of them are from Katherine’s point of view, and two are from Cass’s. It’s a dual POV novel, but Katherine will likely have more chapters. I’m past the inciting incident (the point in novel where the plot kicks off), but I don’t know where the plot is going. I know that there will be magic, danger, and mystery. Also, a lot of ghosts. I’m trying not to put pressure on myself to create a perfect draft. I’m accepting that this first draft will be a bit of a mess! If there’s one thing I learned from writing A Novice’s Fight, it’s that my favorite scenes tend come in the second draft or later.
I consider Necromancywip a sapphic haters-to-lovers novel. Katherine and Cass are more than rivals, but their hatred for each other isn’t quite intense enough for them to be considered enemies. Either way, their relationship is tricky to write. Their conversations (or arguments, rather) can’t be too over-the-top, but they can’t be amicable yet. There’s also the matter of adding depth to their hatred—flashbacks from years past, how things turned sour, and the like. I’ve already got some ideas, so I can’t wait to write them into the story.
I’ve made a decent habit of writing daily—even if it’s less than planned. I hope I can keep it up!
Long Story Short…
What I’m Reading: While in Dallas, I bought a copy of This is Why They Hate Us by Aaron H. Aceves. I read most of it on the plane ride back. I loved reading about Quique’s antics and strategies for getting over his crush on his best friend. Also: fantastic bisexual rep.
Right now, I’m reading Talia Hibbert’s young adult novel, Highly Suspicious and Unfairly Cute. I adore the characters, especially the ones Brad and Celine meet while participating in the BEP, which involves a lot of time outdoors. I enjoyed her other books more, but don’t get me wrong: this one’s great.
What I’m Watching: So many things! Some of my favorites this month were The Mole, Supacell (haven’t finished yet), Crime Scene Kitchen, and Shameless.
What I’m Doing: At the end of June, I went to a lovely queer book convention, LavenderCon. I bought TONS of books, plus stickers and mini zines. If you’re curious about the books I bought, check out the reel I made here.
I talked about the crispy tofu and cauliflower rice I made last month, and how I wanted to make it again. Well, I did! It was delicious, and I made a few changes: I fried the tofu in ghee, made the sauce less thin, and added kimchi to the cauliflower rice. The result? Deliciousness.
Hopefully I’ll have a real plot next month (lol). Anyway, I’ll see you all soon for a special edition post: an ARC review of Sujin Witherspoon’s BINGSU FOR TWO!
